By John Distaso, The Union Leader
A U.S. House subcommittee has subpoenaed the federal Justice Department for
information "relating to the approval, scope and timing" of a federal probe
of the illegal New Hampshire Republican phone-jamming operation of 2002.
Information on department's handling of the phone-jamming case was part of
list of 21 items related to six investigations being undertaken by the House
Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law. The subpoena
was issued last Friday.

In the New Hampshire case, the subpoena calls for:
"Complete and unredacted versions, including complete paper and electronic
versions, of any and all documents relating to the approval, scope and
timing of the investigation and indictments in the matter concerning efforts
by Republican operatives to jam telephones of the New Hampshire Democratic
Party and others during the 2002 election."
Paul Twomey, a local Democratic attorney who has been involved in the case,
said, "We're heartened that the Judiciary Committee is continuing to
investigate this matter."
Twomey said the subcommittee appears interested in pursuing a media report
from December 2007 alleging that the justice department delayed prosecuting
former Republican National Committee official James Tobin until after the
2004 election.
